Gaborone 0-2 Zesco

“IT’S a sweet three points and not revenge”, were the words of Zesco Ndola Girls coach Florence Mwila after her side thrashed defending champions Gaborone United to finish top of Group A.

Zesco finished with nine points to maintain a 100 percent winning record at the CAF Women’s Champions League, COSAFA Qualifiers.

Goals apiece from striker Charity Mubanga and midfielder Avell Chitundu were enough to earn the Zambian league champions maximum points and ensure they avoided meeting two-time champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the semifinals.

The win means the Mwila-coached side will face either Club de Desportos da Costola do Sol of Mozambique or Silver Strikers of Malawi.

Zesco have scored eight goals in three games and only conceded twice and will be hoping to build on their fine form going into their semi-final encounter set for this Thursday.

Speaking during the post-match interview, Mwila described the victory as sweet and a step towards achieving the set target.

“It’s a sweet three points. Like in the previous press conferences, it’s not a revenge. We are here to play the game. Last year was different, and definitely the approach will be different this time.

“We knew we were facing a tough opponent and, looking at the history, we knew what was at stake. We knew that we needed to approach the game in a different way than we approached the previous games, and I am happy that we played our game today,” Mwila said.

Mwila expressed happiness with the team’s display and character throughout the game.

“We played split passes, combination play, and those are things we would have loved to see in the previous games that we played. The game was so tactical. It was a high-intensity match, and kudos to the girls; they really accounted for themselves very well. The character was top notch,” she said.

She said the team was ready to face any opponent in the semi-finals.

“There is no preference for any team. We play any team that comes. We are prepared. This is a tournament. We will meet any opponent, so we have to be prepared. We can’t say we want to play against this team. We play any team that comes,” Mwila said.
