Chief justice speaks

The Judiciary says the documents, described as “the people’s presidential petition,” were received through the Chief Justice’s private email and have not been formally filed with the court.

Chief Justice Mumba Malila has described as highly irregular the submission of official court documents by a private citizen through his private electronic mail (email) address.

Dr Justice Malila said he received documentation designated as ‘the people’s presidential petition’ via his private email which was highly irregular.

He, however, quite exceptionally used his administrative powers and referred the documents to the Constitutional Court for its consideration on the filing of the documentation.

He expected that the affected parties would hear from the court in due course.

This is according to a statement issued by Judiciary of Zambia deputy corporate communications director Kalumba Chisambisha-Slavin in Lusaka yesterday.

Ms Chisambisha-Slavin said the Judiciary was also aware of social media assertions claiming that the petition had been formally and duly filed.
