Arrows B 5 Diggers A 10
‘MEN At Work’, Diggers- A narrowly defeated defending champions Red Arrows B to grab the the 2017 Roan 7s tournament in Luanshya and ended the ‘Air Wolves’ cup dominance on the rugby scene.
Prior to this tournament, Arrows who bagged four trophies in the Zambia Rugby Union (ZRU) 10s, KPF American 15s tournament, Mopani Copper Mines 15s and Owen Busange 7s tournament they recently won in Mufulira failed after only placing a try in the finals.
Peca Phiri’s try was not enough to help his team defend the Cup but a try each from Jason Thole and Ntumba Besa was all coach Lawrence Njovu needed to get his sweet revenge over his boss Mwamba Chishimba, who beat him at the same tournament last year.
Njovu an assistant coach to Chishimba at national 15s saw his team overcome the most feared team to collect their first cup of season and received K6, 000 plus a trophy while Arrows B settled for K3, 500.
On their way to the finals, Diggers A saw-off Lusaka 24-5 in quarter-final before they went on to dispatch Mufulira 19-7 at the semi-finals while Arrows edged KPF 26-7 in the quarters and
Nkwazi 15-5 in the semi-finals.
In the Plate Finals, Arrows A defeated Buffaloes 12-0 to salvage some pride for the Zambia Air Force (ZAF) team to pocket K2, 000.
The two teams had triumphed against ‘Powerhouse’ Lusaka 16-7 and Kitwe
Playing Fields (KPF) 12-7 in the Plate semi-finals respectively.
As if the main cup prize was not enough, Diggers B came to terrorise other teams in the Bowl Cup final by overwhelmingly silencing the host Roan 12-0 in the Bowl Cup finals to received K1, 000.
To reach the finals, Diggers B, killed ‘Killer Bees’ Ndola Wanderers 35-0 in the semi final one while Roan showed no mercy on Kansanshi crushing them to 28-0 in semi-final two.
Roan’s Alex Mwewa was voted player of the tournament and went away with K500.
