BY ADRIAN MWANZA –
TODAY, 400m female star runner Kabange Mupopo launches Zambia’s prospects as she takes to the tracks at the ongoing London wWorld Athletics Championships.
Mupopo, the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) gold medallist, would be hoping she carries on picking up wins but knows the London Meet is one that brings the world’s best to the show.
Two Zambian runners are representing the country at the tournament with theother being male sprinter Sidney Siame who will be running in the 200mtomorrow evening.
Siame, who was at the centre of controversy after IAAF refused toaccept his national record time of 9.88 seconds in the 100m dash which he set during theAll Comers Meet at Heroes stadium, will be looking to prove his critics wrong when hecompetes in the event on Monday.
The athlete, who has been in Europe preparing for theevent, has managed to score good times but knows this event in Usain Bolt’s favourite.
National team coach Douglas Kalembo however said he was confident thathis runners will do well at the tournament despite coming up against the world’s best.
“I just want to urge the guys not lose momentum when they competeagainst some world class athletes at the championships and not think about the big stage,” he said.
