In a move sure to draw cheers from many quarters, a senior chief in Eastern Province has struck a blow for families headed by irresponsible men.
Chief Madzimawe of the Ngoni peope of Chipata has surrendered an alcoholic to the local police for refusing to provide food for his family, judging such conduct as amounting to gender-based violence.
The man, identified as Mabvuto Nyirenda, of  Lufu Msendo village, is reported to have first been invited to the offices the Anti Gender Based Violence Squad, which operates under the auspices of the Madzimawe Foundation but he tore up the summons.

For his troubles, he reported to the Chipata Central Police Victim Support Unit- VSU who picked him up.
According to the royal’s communications office, Chief Madzimawe wants to send a strong message to his subjects that family heads that “tortured innocent children and spouses” by not providing food and other needs of their families were committing gender-based violence.
According to information obtained from the Madzimawe Foundation communications unit, Chief Madzimawe wants his subjects to focus on growing more food to fight hunger in his chiefdom.
“We have instructed the same Anti-GBV Palace Committee to step up sensitisation activities in areas of the chiefdom where many cases are being reported,” Chief Madzimawe is reported to have said.
