By KASONDE KASONDE –
THE Pontoon at Lunsemfwa River that broke down on Monday leaving the people of Luano District cut off from the rest of the region has been repaired.
Luano District Commissioner Luka Mwamba said the local people and engineers managed to fix the pontoon and people and vehicles had started crossing over the Lunsemfwa River.
He however said the measures put in to repair the pontoon were temporal and that possibilities of it collapsing again were high as it was old.
“Works have been done on the Pontoon but am afraid to say that it will only run for a short while before another accident happens”, Mr Mwamba said.
Mr Mwamba said the farmers that were cut off from the other parts of the province had since started crossing over.
He said the farmers are happy that their merchandise has started crossing over to the Kabwe market.
Mr Mwamba said a bridge is the only lasting solution to help the people as the Pontoon was not reliable due to its old state.
On Monday residents of Luano District in Central Province living across Lunsemfwa River suffered a major blow after a pontoon they use to cross to Kabwe collapsed.
The pontoon tilted under the weight of a truck that was transporting farm produce to Kabwe District among them groundnuts and maize, apart from chickens and goats.
