THE Zambia Amateur Athletics Association (ZAAA) is scouting for K70, 000 to send one runner and a coach for the Under-18 World Championships in Kenya next week.
ZAAA general secretary Davison Mung’ambata said the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) provided full sponsorship to two athletes but Zambia had qualified three runners for the event that starts on July 12.
Zambia would be represented by budding sprinter Suwilanji Mpondela, Kennedy Luchembe and Middy Mingilishi.
“The K70, 000 is meant to cater for one athlete and the coach because as you are aware IAAF only gave us a quota for two athletes and for the other one we have to foot the bill ourselves,” he said.
Mung’ambata said ZAAA had written to a number of stakeholders to help raise the funds so that the third runner could go and compete in Nairobi.
“Apparently we have not received any feedback from the companies that we wrote to and the championships are starting in less than a week. We are confident that the runners would do us proud and we urge them to die a little and bring medals,” he said.
