GOVERNMNET has secured 1,000 hectares of land in Misaka forest for 186 of the 418 households affected by the construction of the new International airport on the Copperbelt.
Copperbelt Permanent Secretary Elias Kamanga said the airport will sit on 2,000 hectares of land in the Ndola west forest reserve number 54.
“Government has prepared a resettlement action plan of K21, 478,986 to compensate all the affected persons,” he said.
He said the land for relocation of affected farmers has been surveyed and other preparatory works were currently going on.
Mr Kamanga said provisional letters of offer for the affected persons were ready and his office would issue them in the course of next week.
“The money for compensation is ready and details of disbursement will be availed to the affected community during the disclosure meeting my office will hold with the community,” he said.
Land would be allocated equitably to the land that one owned before and that necessary documents will be required for authentication and proof of ownership by the settlers.
“The ground breaking for the project has been set for June 25, and the contract was awarded to Avic International,” he said.
Mr Kamanga added that the province is extremely excited on the construction of the structure and was confident that the airport will be the best in the country and possibly the region.
