By JULIUS PHIRI –

A GROUP of Roman Catholic members at Chassa Parish in Chipata Diocese has broken away from the main church and formed their own church called Catholic One.

The group belonged to the Charismatic Renewal Movement at the parish.

Chassa Parish Priest Bonaventure Kamlewe said they group broke away because of failure to recognise the African Bible and Apostle’s Creed which the Catholic Church uses in its liturgy.

Father Kamlewe said the group was always against the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church.

Chipata Catholic Diocese Auxiliary Bishop Benjamin Phiri said Diocesan Bishop George Lungu would soon issue a declaration against the breakaway group at Chassa Parish.

Bishop Phiri said during Christmas Eve mass held at St Annes Cathedral Parish that the move by the Charismatic members at Chassa Parish was wrong.

He said it was unfortunate that the Charismatic members had decided to scandalise the name of the Catholic Church by adopting the name ‘Catholic One’.
