THE Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) leadership has distanced itself from the letter by the Opposition Alliance signed by Nevers Mumba as party president demanding the immediate release of incarcerated UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema.
MMD national secretary Raphael Nakachinda says Dr Mumba signed the letter in his own individual capacity and not as MMD president as presented in the section of the media.
“The case which Dr Nevers Mumba took to court where he is challenging the holding of the Extra Ordinary Convention has yet to be decided by the Courts of Law and there is no way Court Order which was issued to reinstate Dr Mumba as MMD party president,” he said.
Mr Nakachinda has since asked the House of Chiefs through the chairperson Chief Ntambu to recognise Felix Mutati as the legitimate MMD president adding that it was an illegality for someone else to call himself president of the MMD political party.
His reaction comes in the wake of a story in one of the tabloids of yesterday that published a letter to the House of Chiefs from the Opposition Alliance and signed by Dr Mumba as MMD president.
Mr Nakachinda says the correct legal position of the MMD leadership was that the national executive committee which was elected at the last Extra Ordinary Convention in Kabwe was headed by Mr Mutati as party president and the national secretary is himself (Mr Nakachinda).
