THE Zambia Rugby Union (ZRU) in partnership with the RG Sports Management will reward 12 deserving players who will impress at next month’s Victoria Falls 7s tournament in Zimbabwe with contracts.
ZRU general secretary Francis Chitambo said in an interview that the 12 players would also earn the honour of representing Zambia at the four major international events.
The Victoria Falls International 7’s tournament is scheduled to be held from February 18 to 19 at Elephant Hills.
Chitambo said the Victoria Falls tournament where Zambia will be represented by the A and B teams, would be used to select the country’s sevens main team.
He said the initiative was aimed at broadening the game and promoting sports competitiveness among players.
Chitambo said the Zimbabwe event comes at a time Zambia is hoping to build a side that will compete for honours at the Zambia International 7’s slated for September as well as challenging for core status at the International Rugby Board sevens circuit.
“The union in partnership with RG Sports Management will select 12 players who will impress most and reward them with contracts. They will represent the country at the Kenya, Botswana, Namibia and Zambia international 7s tournaments,” he said.
He said the rest of the players will be put into the reserve team in case of injuries to the main team.
Chitambo said the national 7s team will be under the management of RG Sporting Management and would decide where to camp the team.
