POLICE CAP-BIG PIXBy KASONDE KASONDE –
A COUPLE of Congolese origin has been arrested in a suspected human trafficking case involving seven children in Sesheke District in Western Province.
Western Province Police Ccommissioner Charles Lungu said the two were apprehended from a named lodge in the early hours of yesterday with seven children suspected to have been smuggled from Congo into the country en route to an unknown destination.
Mr Lungu said police arrested Lemmy Lumbala, 38, and his wife Fify Mulangu, 32, for suspected human trafficking after they (police) received a tip-off from the public.
“I can confirm that we have apprehended Lumbala and his wife after they were found with seven children aged 11,10,7,6,4 and  two aged 12 in what looks like a pure case of human trafficking,” Mr Lungu.
Among the seven, five are girls while two are boys.
Mr Lungu said the couple had no proper papers to prove the paternity of the seven children and no travel documents.
Police have since launched investigations into the matter.
Mr Lungu said the Immigration Department would proceed with investigations on illegal entry into the country and police would investigate the human trafficking case.
He said police were considering carrying out DNA tests to prove the paternity of the seven children.
Mr Lungu commended the members of the public for the tip that led to the couple being apprehended and also for the cooperation in the investigations.
He said police were still searching for other people who could have been acting with the couple to traffic the children.
