THE Zambia National Marketeers Credit Association (ZANAMACA) has said it is unfortunate that markets were being burnt because of political reasons.
ZANAMACA president Mupila Kameya said it was unfortunate that some disgruntled politicians were burning markets which was a drawback on efforts of the marketeers to improve their livelihood.
Mr Kameya said this in an interview in Lusaka yesterday.
“These fires are mainly political. They are those that are aggrieved so the only way to revenge is to create problems in markets. Everyone knows that marketeers give a lot of support to the creation of any Government so that’s their strategy,” he said.
Mr Kameya hoped that the law enforcement officers would look into the matter in detail as the occurrences were not healthy to the unity and peace of Zambia.
He advised marketeers to ensure that their property was insured so that if anything happened, they could still continue with their business.
Government should consider giving more security to market places as these were the sources of income for many people.
Mr Kameya appealed to all Zambians to keep calm as they waited for the Constitutional Court to make a ruling on the petition.
Insecurity and uncertainty has gripped a lot of marketeers over the safety of their goods and lives as some markets in Lusaka and Kitwe have been set ablaze on unknown grounds.
