By KASONDE KASONDE –
GOVERNMENT has suspended the swearing-in of newly elected mayors, council chairpersons and councillors to a later date.
Ministry of Local Government and Housing Permanent Secretary Amos Malupenga said that local authorities were therefore advised that the date for the swearing-in would be communicated in due course.
Mr Malupenga said that in view of the directive, no swearing-in of mayors, council chairpersons and councillors should take place for now.
He said following the elections that were held this month, the new councillors were required to be sworn in before taking office in accordance with the Constitution.
He said this in a statement yesterday.
“Local authorities are advised that the date for swearing-in and start of inaugural council meetings will be communicated in due course after guidance from the Ministry,” Mr Malupenga said.
Mr Malupenga urged the councillors to use the time before the swearing-in to reflect on the past mistakes and failures in order for them to execute their duties with the necessary dignity and honour.
He congratulated the councillors for their election to the council, adding that the Ministry was looking forward to their  valuable contributions as they discharged their duties.
