SCORES of Patriotic Front (PF) youths and traders in Kabwe yesterday marched in solidarity with President Edgar Lungu’s calls to denounce violence and maintain peace in the aftermath of the 2016 general election.
Marchers started their march from the Hindu Hall and passed through the central business district before presenting their petition to Central Province Permanent Secretary Daisy Ng’ambi at the provincial administration.
Kabwe District PF chairperson Mulenga Chella who led the residents said the event was organised after the realisation that some areas were still experiencing violence in the post-election period.
“This is basically in solidarity with our President who has denounced violence, we believe that the elections are over and there is no need to engage in violent acts.
“We need unity and peace because that is the only thing that will help us develop this country otherwise there is no need to fight one another,” Mr Chella said.
Apart from the ruling party officials, the group also consisted of traders, most of them who have benefited from the presidential initiative as well as women groups.
Davis Mwamba, one of the marchers said the walk was peaceful as it was only aimed at affirming the calls by Mr Lungu to maintain peace and desist from violence in the post-election period.
Mr Mwamba said Kabwe would always remain peaceful and was determined to encouraging other parts of the country that had witnessed violence to remain united.
Meanwhile, Kabwe Town Clerk Ronald Daka has called on the general public to exercise patience and remain peaceful as the Constitutional Court presided over the presidential petition.
Mr Daka observed that without peace, the country would not achieve the goals that had been set thereby disadvantaging especially the youths.
“For us here in Kabwe, I think now that elections are over and we have the petition in court we need to remain peaceful. We want to see how we can create employment for the youths through improving the industries around here,” he said.
