ZAMBIANS Lukanga Mambwe and Elias Munkondia shot into joint leadership of the ongoing Draughts-64 African Championship amassing 14 points each after nine rounds of the games played.
Mambwe has, however, been given the edge to lead his Zambian rival, Munkondia, on a scores tie breaker.
Sitting in close third and fourth positions is another pair tied on 12 points and these are Isaac Bafaki and Sam Senoga, both Ugandans, but have been separated by the same tie breaker.
In the fifth position is Thom Madalitso from Malawi with 10 points, same as sixth placed Emmanuel Chembo and Prosperly Banda in seventh.
Both Chembo and Banda are from Zambia with the eighth position going to Enock Makoka Banda from Malawi and Clemence Tonderai from Zimbabwe both taking ninth but also on 10 points each.
Zambian champion Kennedy Phiri was in 10th position and also on 10 points.
Zambia Draught Federation (ZDF) president Tentani Mwanza expressed happiness with the performance of Zambian players stating it was encouraging to see them stand strong against Africa’s best.
“We are doing well as Zambia and I am proud that we are leading the table so far after nine rounds being played. We are humbled to be the host nation of this major tournament in the history of Africa and we as Zambia are hoping we can win it,” he said.
