FORMER national team player and coach Fred Mwila says Chipolopolo goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene should quickly join a team that will play him regularly to retain his sharpness ahead of the crucial World Cup qualifiers.
In an interview Mwila observed that at the moment, Chipolopolo only have Mweene to rely on in goal and his lack of game time was not good news for the technical bench.
Mwila said with the World Cup qualifiers scheduled to start in two months time, it was important that all players were ready for the assignment, adding that the goalkeeping department was a crucial area that needed a player who was ready.
Mweene has been dropped to third choice at Mamelodi Sundowns behind David Onyango and Wayne Sandilands and he is reportedly getting frustrated due to lack of game time.
The South African Press have reported that Mweene is eager to leave Sundowns for a club that would guarantee him first team football.
“I think he has to find another club. He is an important player for the national team and he needs to play regularly for him to be sharp.
We still need him. For now he is the only one we can rely on in goal,” Mwila said.
He said there was no need to replace him but ensure that he had enough game time because he still has a lot to offer to the national team.
Mweene is usually seconded by Jacob Banda or Danny Munyau at the national team.
Mwila further said there was no need to fear any team in the group which comprises Algeria, Cameroun and Nigeria.
He said Zambia always rose to the occasion against strong sides adding that it was time Chipolopolo proved that they were still a heavyweight in African football.
“All we need to do is be positive and confident. I’m sure even our opponents know that we are a tough side so we just have to be strong,” he said.
