By SAMUEL LUKHANDA – NATIONAL champions Matero Magic have maintained their 100 per cent winning start from the jump after four rounds in the Zambia Basketball Association (ZBA) Midlands league, while Hawks have kept up their giant slaying act. In the feminine league, Nishati Shells stay in front, a big thanks in part to UNZA Honeys who were out of action but Matero Magic Sparks lost their sparkle. Magic 66 Suns 63 It might be early days but it looks like there is no stopping the national champions’ winning streak as they stretched it to four since the season kicked off. Magic beat Munali Suns by three points to collect maximum points and remain on top of the ZBA midlands league standing while the Suns lie in the sixth position. Hawks 81 Buffaloes 75 The resurgent Hawks took down the marauding Green Buffaloes in the pick-of-the-weekend games as they continue with their giant-killing mission. The result sees the Hawks fly to third position on the log having won three of the four games played this far while Buffaloes slump to fifth winning two and dropping another two. Before ‘killing’ Buffaloes, Hawks destroyed UNZA Pacers in week three via a 81-74 score in daring fashion. Looters 64 Hurricanes 80 After failing to Matero Magic by three points, Hurricanes came with full force to blow away LCC Looters by 16 points and remain second on the log behind Magic. Hurricanes have won three of the four played and the loss to Magic was their first of the season, while Looters mop the bottom of the standings and they need to man up if they have to remain in the elite league. Pacers 57 ZCAS Blazers 42 The battle of the students always favoured the battle hardened UNZA boys as the new-comers from ZCAS succumbed on the first time of asking. Coming from a loss, Pacers needed to keep pace with other contenders and the coach got the response from his players and eventually the result which took Blazers down to seventh on the log, while Pacers are fourth. Elsewhere Nishati Denvers beat Green Eagles 71-65. In the B league, Heroes destroyed Lilanda 101-42 with Junior Hurricanes beating Dragons 72-37 and Huskies winning 60-55 against Buffaloes B. Knights lost to Raiders 81-69, Junior Looters were beaten by Mazabuka Comets who whacked them 83-65. In the feminine league, Shell edged Breezes by a basket with a 53-51 score to stay on top while LCC Lootresses beat Hotspur 44-37 while Unza Honeys were on bye.
