By MILDRED KATONGO –
THE Government will next week sign a contract worth K300 million with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation and Nakangeya to commence the construction of Mpogwe-Machiya Road to bituminous standard.
Information and Broadcasting Services Minister Chishimba Kambwili said the Patriotic Front (PF) Government had prioritised infrastructure development, and that each area was getting a fair share of development.
Dr Kambwili said during a rally held to drum up support for Mpongwe PF parliamentary candidate Emmanuel Kasambo and councillors that the Government would, on July 22 this year, sign the contract to tar Mpongwe-Machiya Road and that the contractors would immediately move on site.
The minister said Mpongwe would also benefit from the ongoing Copperbelt (C400) road project as it would cover a stretch of 15 kilometres of township roads.
Dr Kambwili said the Government would also upgrade 396 kilometres of feeder roads in the area to enable easy mobility and help farmers transport their goods to markets.
“Let me announce that on Friday next week, Government will sign a contract to embark on the construction of the Mpongwe-Machiya Road.
“Government is constructing roads, health facilities and schools and Mpongwe has not been left out,” Dr Kambwili said.
He said Mpongwe had benefitted from seven new health posts from the 650 which the Government was putting up countrywide.
He also said in terms of education facilities, three primary schools in the area had been upgraded to secondary schools while some secondary schools had been erected.
He said the Government would also put up a modern post office for the people in the area.
Dr Kambwili further said the PF Government had increased the number of farmers to benefit from the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) this year, and that in Mpongwe more than 27,000 farmers had so far benefitted from the scheme.
Mr Kasambo asked the people of Mpongwe to vote for him as their area member of Parliament and to vote for the PF in this year’s general elections to enable the party complete the projects it had started.
He said he was born and bred in Mpongwe and that he knew the challenges the people in the area faced.
“Vote for me and the PF. You have seen what we are doing in terms of infrastructure development and also in terms of caring for the farmers,” Mr Kasambo said.
