LUSAKA Central and Roan shared spoils winning the men’s and women’s events respetively during the 2016 National Bowling Championship played at the Lusaka Sports Club.
Hosts Lusaka won the men’s triples category after narrowly beating Nchanga 17-14 while Roan beat the midlands side 20-14 to claim the honours.
Edah Mpezeni of Kansenshi won the ladies singles final after defeating Sophie Matipa 20-10 with Mathews Mercer of Lusaka dislodging Kevin Riddifold as men’s champion following a 21-15 win.
Zambia Bowling Association (ZBA) treasurer Bright Mwanza described the event as a success adding that the tournament was used as part of preparations for the African States Championships to be held in Zimbabwe.
Mwanza said the association is scouting for K120,000 to take the national team comprising 12 players to Zimbabwe for the championship slated for September 9 and that various stakeholders have been engaged to assist raise the money.
“We have actually engaged a number of stakeholders to help us with resources that will ensure the bowlers take part in the tournament. We have not yet received any feedback yet but we remain hopeful something will work out,’’ he said.
The women team has Foster Banda, Mpezeni, Mary Ntonongela, Rhoda Namposha, Getrude Siame and team manager Julie Mumanga whil the men’s team has Darlyson Mweetwa, Bright Mwanza, Harry Musonda, Clavel Chikwanda, Mercer and Wezi Tembo.
Mwanza said 10 countries will take part in the championships and that Zambia will be a serious contender for the title.
