POLICE in Lusaka have arrested a man and his fiancée after he attempted to write an examination on her behalf at Information and Communication University (ICU).
Both Police deputy spokesperson Rae Hamoonga and ICU registrar Davies Chengo confirmed that George Mbewe of Kabanana Township and his fiancé Ndingile Musumali were arrested for examination malpractice.
Mr Hamoonga said the duo had since been released on bond and will appear in court soon.
The couple was picked up by police on Tuesday around 16:00 hours, when invigilators at the school verified that Mr Mbewe was not the student indicated in the register.
Mr Chengo said Mr Mbewe managed to manipulate the examination slip by adding his name and entered into the examination room.
He said Mr Mbewe pretended to be the student writing the examination when in fact not and that he was later told to produce his National Registration Card (NRC) which did not match.
Mr Chengo said it was at this point that the senior invigilator noticed that the particulars of the identity card did not match with that of the student who was supposed to write the examinations.
He said invigilators later reported to the chief examiner who proceeded with verifications in the student management system.
“A man named George Mbewe of Kabanana in Lusaka was caught writing examinations for his girlfriend by the name of Ndingile Musumali of Libala Water Works in Lusaka.
“Ms Musumali called his fiancé to come and sit for examinations on her behalf. After questioning, she admitted to have asked her fiancée to sit for exams on her behalf, because she was not feeling well,” he said.
Mr Chengo said the school was determined to uphold the academic standards and educational integrity in the country and that it would not compromise on quality.
He said as an institution of higher learning, ICU would remain vigilant and offer the highest academic standards in the country and worldwide.
