PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has renamed Luapula University FTJ University in honour of late President Frederick Chiluba, whom he described as the father of democracy in Zambia.
Meanwhile, the development has been received with joy by the people of Musangu area of Mwense District, the birthplace of Dr Chiluba, Zambia’s second Republican president.
The Head of State announced this during a public rally yesterday.
The FTJ University is earmarked for construction and the contractor has cleared the site.
President Lungu said he decided to rename the university to honour Dr Chiluba, fondly known as FTJ.
“Ba FTJ is the father of democracy. He brought democracy to Zambia as president of the MMD,” Mr Lungu said.
The President said Dr Chiluba was a tested leader who spent years serving the labour movement before leading Zambia for 10 years.
President Lungu said Dr Chiluba served in many capacities before ascending to the Presidency.
“It is not right, therefore, for people to seek election of president without having worked with people previously,” Mr Lungu said.
He urged the people of Musangu to re-elect David Mabumba, the PF candidate, as Mambilima Constituency Member of Parliament.
Christian Democratic Party (CDP) president Danny Pule, who served under Dr Chiluba, said President Lungu had the desire to serve Zambians and should be referred to as the father of development.
“I worked as deputy minister of Finance for eight years. Mr Lungu has done much more in one year six months,” Dr Pule said.
At another rally at Mulundu grounds in Mambilima, President Lungu said the PF wanted to leave a mark in Zambian history.
The Head of State said the PF Government needed another five years to complete its projects.
Meanwhile, President Lungu said the PF would turn Pambashe Constituency in Kawambwa into a district by 2021.
Mr Lungu told a huge rally in Pambashe that the PF was a listening Government.
The President drove from Mambilima to Musangu as people lined up on the road to cheer him on.
