THE United Party for National Development (UPND) has called for unity among political parties to promote non-violence during campaigns ahead of voting on August 11, this year.
UPND president Hakainde Hichilema said at a media briefing on Tuesday that the recent decisions agreed by political players and the church to curb violence should be practised by all Zambians.
Mr Hichilema said it was evident that the country was engulfed in violence by various political parties, and thus challenged political party leaders to find amicable solutions to the continuing mess.
“We must continue working together and uphold a united Zambia, as our economy can never prosper if we are divided,” Mr Hichilema said.
He said political party leaders should create manifestos centred on a good economy by working together to create a better environment for investors.
Mr Hichilema said the UPND was not ready to work with violent members and that anybody who was aggressive should be reported to the police.
UPND Kabwata aspiring parliamentary candidate Mulenga Sata urged political party leaders to protect journalists from harassment.
Mr Sata was saddened by reports of some journalists being harassed by the police, stating that the media was an important platform for information dissemination.
He said Zambia had been known to be a peaceful nation and that members of the public should uphold the values of peace.
