THE United Party for National Development (UPND) in Southern Province has welcomed Inspector General of Police, Kakoma Kanganja’s warning to people brandishing fire arms and other offensive weapons in public.
Mr Kanganja issued the warning last week saying the Police would not hesitate to arrest anyone found wanting and he also directed all police officers to be alert.
This follows a proliferation of items that were dangerous such as pistols, machetes, teaser guns and catapults among others which were being used to cause insecurity in Zambia during the current political campaigns.
UPND Southern Province information and public secretary Neto Halwabala said in a Press statement at the weekend that the province had welcomed and supported the warning.
Mr Halwabala said his members in the province did not move around with stones, hoes, pangas, machetes, axes, crowbars and guns in public.
“Our members do not even have unimpeded access to buying weapons like guns because of the thorough and stringent screening processes for one to buy firearms.
“We are a peaceful party and we value peace as well as unity and oneness as a people of this great land of mother Zambia,” Mr Halwabala said.
He however, said Mr Kanganja’s statement should have been more directed to specific people who were in a habit of brandishing fire arms and other offensive weapons regardless of their political affiliation.
