CHIEF Mumena of the Kaonde people in Solwezi in the North-Western Province has urged political parties and their supporters not to take the law into their own hands but maintain peace during their campaigns ahead of August 11, general elections.
Chief Mumena said the people in rural areas wanted to hear messages and ideas of what the candidates will do for them in terms of development unlike inciting and engaging in violent activities.
He said in an interview that the call for peace was real and that once peace was diluted, nobody would be safe.
Chief Mumena said a time for elections was just another opportunity that the Zambians had to exercise their democratic right to choose the leader of their choice.
He said political parties should not be excited and engage in violent activities but concentrate on selling their ideas to the people on what they intended to do for them in the next five years.
“As you know Zambia is going to the polls on August 11, and I think it is another opportunity for Zambians to select leaders that they wanted.
It is my special appeal to Zambians not take the law into their own hands but ensure that they maintain peace. Those of us in rural communities we want to see campaigns that are going to give us what we are going to expect in the next five years,” he said.
Chief Mumena said political parties and their supporters should maintain peace and ensure that Zambia continued to be a beacon of peace in the continent.
