FORMER Freedom fighters and the Freedom and Democracy Fighters Associations have formed one organisation known as the Zambia National Freedom Fighters Association (ZNFFA) aimed at advocating and improving their well-being.
Secretary of the association Christine Mulundika said there are several organisations currently representing freedom fighters, which brings about challenges in accessing funds from both Government and other stakeholders.
Ms Mulundika said at a Press briefing in Lusaka yesterday that Government had failed to provide financial support due to a number of people advocating freedom fighter’s rights and welfare improvement.
She said any freedom fighter who wished to access financial help and other needs should join the ZNFFA, as it was the main body to represent them.
“We are wallowing in poverty, because we are disorganised, I hope this formation of one organisation will help us work as a team and I am also appealing to our friends, who still want to work in isolation to come and join us,” she said.
The association had also formed a constitution that would provide guidance in monitoring and preaching love, peace, liberty and economic inclusion.
The constitution would also ensure that Government’s commitments to implementing programmes aimed at fighting poverty among freedom fighters and many Zambians were achieved.
Association vice-president David Kabamba said freedom fighters had a role to play in achieving democracy by voting for the right candidates that would ensure continued peace and unity in the country.
Mr Kabamba said the current crop of politicians needed to learn something from the freedom fighters, especially during an election year.
And Fredrick Mwenda appealed to Government to look into the plight of freedom fighters.
