GOVERNMENT has started implementing the second phase of the US$200 million water and sanitation improvement project under Nkana Water and Sewerage Company to cover Kitwe, Kalulushi and Chambishi on the Copperbelt.
The project, which is aimed at improving water supply and sanitation services in the three towns, follows the growing population and the increased demand for clean water.
Kitwe District Commissioner Chanda Kabwe said in an interview that the Government was giving water and sanitation the attention it deserves by funding the phase two project.
He said the contractor for the project, China Henan International Cooperation (CHICO), was on site and soon the project would be completed.
“Government has started implementing the phase two project under the Nkana water supply and sanitation project that would cover Kalulushi, Kitwe and Chambishi at a cost of US$200 million.
“This project came as a result of the growing population and the demand for clean water in the three towns, it also follows phase one that was completed successfully,” Mr Kabwe said.
He said the project would greatly contribute to the improvement of water supply and sanitation services in the said towns.
Mr Kabwe said the pumping in of such an amount in the project demonstrated Government’s commitment to the provision of adequate water supply and sanitation in the towns.
He said this was an indication that Government was committed to providing proper water and sanitation for the people.
“Government has shown its commitment to ensure there is clean water supply and sanitation in the three towns,” he said.
Mr Kabwe also said the project would create massive employment opportunities for the local people.
