GOVERNMENT will soon introduce a teaching practicing licence to promote efficiency in the profession, Education Deputy Minister David Mabumba has said.
Mr Mabumba said a teacher’s professional qualifications would be invalid without a practicing licence.
He has since urged teachers to avoid vices that may prevent them from acquiring the licence.
Mr Mabumba said this in Mwense during an inspection of developmental projects in the constituency.
Mr Mabumba, who is Mwense Member of Parliament, implored teachers in the district to show commitment to their work.
He said it was sad that some teachers in rural schools were not residing within the school premises despite Government building houses for them.
He said the Government had spent huge sums of money to construct houses for teachers in rural areas, but wondered why some of them were shunning the housing units.
The deputy minister encouraged teachers to be role models to the communities in which they serve and avoid behaviour that might be retrogressive.
Some teachers interviewed said they preferred to reside in areas away from their schools for fear of witchcraft, lack of accommodation, lack of electricity and an absence of social amenities. – ZANIS
