ZIMBABWEAN World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight Silver champion Charles Manyuchi pocketed US$35, 000 from beating Russian Dmitry “Mechanic” Mikhaylenko at DVS Arena in Yekaterinburg at the weekend.
Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotion (OQBP) Operations Manager Christopher Malunga confirmed this at a press briefing held at The Horse Shoe yesterday.
Manyuchi won a unanimous points decision in Russia.
And Manyuchi expressed happiness about his win especially that it came against a tough opponent.
Manyuchi went on to eulogise his handlers Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) for their role in his winning such a big fight.
“Even as I fought that side, I was considered a Zambian and all this is because of the good works of Oriental who are putting Zambia on the world map. People know Zambia as a country with good boxers. So I am appealing to the government to see the good works this team does,” Manyuchi said.
“I know I have to share what I got with these guys in some way, but I also have a family and I cannot give them something that will also help them feed their families. So all I am asking is for government to recognise their work because they do a lot for us boxers,” he said.
And OQBP Operations Manager Christopher Malunga was ecstatic about the win and that Manyuchi was now a big brand in Europe after two key wins on that continent.
Malunga also reiterated his Stable’s frustrations at government delayed move to honour Catherine Phiri over her achievements.
“If something is not going right, someone needs to stand up and say it out. I believe it is my right to comment over such issues. If it was football, even the people who were not on the pitch would benefit from the win. But it is a different story with minor sports. Why is it so?” he questioned.
And Malunga also announced that OQBP was constructing two state-of-the art gymnasiums at a total cost of US$580,000 and that the two would be opened soon as equipment was already in.
