A TWENTY-YEAR-OLD mother of Makululu Township in Kabwe was found giving birth in a bucket of water in a bid to kill her baby.
Central Province Police chief Lombe Kamukoshi identified the suspect as Harriet Musonda.
Ms Kamukoshi disclosed that Leticia Malambo, 27, a neighbour in Makululu Township reported the suspect to Kasanda Police station.
“Harriet Musonda, 20, was found giving birth to a baby in her small room while sitting on a 10 litre bucket which contained water on Thursday around 15:00 hours to kill the baby,” she said.
Ms Kamukoshi said after the discovery, neighbours intervened and rescued both the mother and the baby alive and rushed them to the hospital.
However, the baby died and the suspect was detained and later sent to the hospital pending further investigations.
Ms Kamukoshi also said postmortem would be conducted to establish the cause of the baby’s death.
