ZAMBIA’S top golfer Madalitso Muthiya is disappointed with his failed attempt to win the 2016 Zambia Sugar Open.
In an interview in Lusaka, Muthiya admitted that it was disappointing that he could not build on the confidence and trust the Zambians put in him by winning the championship.
He said every year he participated in the Zambia Sugar Open with a view to winning the title and that this year was not an exception as he was riding on good form.
“I think the tournament was very good. It was well organised. Unfortunately, I didn’t take advantage of the opportunities I created for myself, so it was a little disappointing on my end. But all in all, four-under being the worst score I could shoot, it’s ok.
“Everytime you don’t take advantage of opportunities when you know you can win, it is always disappointing. But I have a lot of positives moving forward in terms of rectifying the mistakes I made,” he said.
Muthiya finished in joint 34th position on four-under-par, which was 12 shots behind the winner Christofer Blomstrand.
The Zambian golfer said he would now focus on the Mauritius Tournament which is a European Tour event and the Swaziland Open before returning to Zambia to compete in the Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) Open at Nchanga Golf Club.
“Yes I am committed to it (KCM Zambia Open) so I am definitely coming for it. Like I said, I finished four-under-par so it’s an indication that I am playing well enough to contend, I just have to take advantage of the opportunities,” he said.
Out of the 30 local golfers that took part in the Zambia Sugar Open, only Muthiya and Dayne Moore made the cut, but the latter had a disappointing competition finishing the tournament on six-over-par despite starting on a promising note on three-under in the first round.
