CONSTRUCTION of the US$29 million Freedom Park shopping mall which stalled for more than 10 years is being revived.
Workers were seen at the weekend doing some clearing to pave the way for the full resumption of works to the main building.
Sources close to the project said full works would start once the unveiling of the foundation stone is officially done.
A Kitwe youth, Geoffrey Mupeta, who was found at the site looking for employment, expressed happiness about the new development, saying it would lead to significant job creation considering the number of facilities that would be accommodated at the mall.
“We don’t know who has taken up the responsibility of constructing the mall which stalled for about 10 years. The shopping mall was supposed to come on board even before Mukuba mall came on stream,” Mr Mupeta said.
He said this was a welcome development coonsidering employment prospects for youths.
According to the earlier design, the mall would have a world class shopping and entertainment facility that would serve the people on the Copperbelt region and elsewhere.
It was to have 18,000 square metre letable area, comprising over 50 tenants.
The construction of Freedom Park shopping mall was first given to a local company at a cost of US$29 million but no tangible works were carried out.
