CONSTRUCTION of the Monze-Niko Road in Southern Province has advanced with 37 kilometres tarred so far.
Namwala District Commissioner Mary Sakala said the tarring of the 74-kilometre stretch was expected to be completed in July this year.
Ms Sakala said construction works had speeded up following Government’s termination of the contract of the previous contractor and later engaging Buildcon and Unik contractors.
She, however, said the only challenge hampering works were the rains, but was hopeful that more progress would be made after the rainy season.
Ms Sakala said once the road was commissioned, it will shorten the distance and time to reach Namwala and Itezhi-tezhi districts, which were the main suppliers of animals like cattle for beef and dairy products.
And residents of Mbeza, Bweengwa, Moonga and Niko townships have thanked Government for the road works, saying it was a dream come true.
“We are happy now that the road we thought would never be developed has been tarred and will soon be completed,” they said.
A check at the construction site found residents donating foodstuffs to Unik and Buildcon workers.
