WE support Fisheries and Livestock Permanent Secretary David Shamulenge’s directive to recruited officers in the newly-created districts to move to their respective stations failure to which they must face disciplinary action.
The Government should discipline all the officers that have not moved to their newly-designated bases or let them surrender their pay because the way the situation seems to be, they are just being paid for doing nothing.
The officers must know that it is illegal to draw a Government salary but fail to provide services to the people.
Those on transfer should immediately move to their new stations to accelerate development countrywide.
Development should not only occur along the line of rail but throughout the country.
Of course some people may bring in a lack of accommodation and other social amenities but the fact that these officers signed the contracts makes it imperative that they have to move and provide services to people in areas where they are posted.
In any case, how do these officers expect any place to develop if there are no people to ensure things are in place?
They should be part of the development process because it is their duty to do so.
Yes, the beginning could be rough but even in private life, it is not always that the beginning is sweet.
People need to work hard to achieve meaningful success unlike waiting to be spoon-fed.
It is undisputable that it is Government responsibility to provide for its citizens, but who is the Government and what is your role as an individual or citizen of this country?
The attitude exhibited by the workers who refused to move to their new stations does not augur well for development.
People living in the rural areas and towns are also human beings and citizens of this country who deserve to be served just as anybody else.
What justification could one give for getting a salary that he/she has not worked for? It is purely criminal and we urge the Government to take action against the officers in question.
People need to appreciate that the policy measure of creating districts was aimed at taking development closer to the people.
The creation of the districts was aimed at creating job opportunities and to stimulate economic growth.
In addition, investors would not be attracted as long as there is no activity in the areas.
Rural development of the country is first and foremost the best way, for example, to get farm goods to the market quickly and economically.
On the other hand, the Government should maintain the momentum of infrastructure development that is taking place countrywide so as to further enhance economic growth, especially in the rural areas.
Therefore, people appointed to public office should be aware that theirs is a responsibility to serve the common good of the nation or community.
Moreover, many of the greatest leaders and high-profile people came from poor, rural backgrounds. Opinion
