GOVERNMENT has handed over a dredger to Kalabo district in Western Province to clear canals and ease transportation, District Commissioner, Fridah Luhila has said.
She said the dredger had been availed at a good time to clean Siluwe Canal, thereby allow commercial boats to sail from Kalabo to Makoma area and Angola.
Ms Luhila said clearing of the canal would facilitate the movement of more goods and services in Kalabo.
“Most of the business men and women use long boats to transport their merchandise to and from Kalabo,” she said.
Ms Luhila said the dredger would be used to remove debris from the bottom of the canal and increase its depth to ensure safe passage of boats.
She said Kalabo enjoyed a good business relationship with cross-border traders from Angola, hence the need to enhance business opportunities in order to contribute significantly to the growth of the district.
Ms Luhila said the dredger would help facilitate smooth movement of  commercial boats from Kalabo and surrounding areas.
She said the number of tourists that visited Liuwa National Park, which was one of the tourism sites in Kalabo, would rise once the canal was cleared.
The clearing of the canal, which had already commenced, is likely to take six months.
Ms Luhila thanked the Government for making sure that business activities between Kalabo and Angola were sustained.
