THE Africa Golf Confederation (AGC) has awarded Zambia the rights to host the 2017 Zone-Six golf championship.
Zambia Golf Union (ZGU) General Secretary Kelly Munsaka said in an interview yesterday that the country was awarded the hosting rights at the end of the Swaziland tournament where Zambia finished second to South Africa.
Munsaka said the union would soon meet to decide on which dates and venues the tournament will take place.
“We have been awarded to host the region five Zone six golf championship on behalf of the union I accepted the honour of hosting the tournament next year,” he said.
He said it was an honour to host the games and that there was nothing strange in hosting the event as Zambia had done well in the last two years in hosting the All-Africa junior championship back-to-back.
Munsaka said the country hosted the two events without a glitch and that there was no reason it would fail to host the Zone-Six games and that the ZGU’s aim was to show the Africa Golf Confederation that it can host even bigger events.
“Hosting the games won’t be a problem for us because we already have a blue print, we hosted the All-Africa junior championship in the last two years and it was successful. We are confident the Zone six won’t be a problem and we shall seize this opportunity to raise the flag high.
“This is an honour for us as a union and country to host the championship, we have done it before and this one will not be a problem,” Munsaka said.
He said the union would partner with stakeholders and the Government through the Sports Council of Zambia (SCZ) to make sure that the event is a big success.
Munsaka, however, said the golfers that took part in the championship in Swaziland should use that as a dress rehearsal for the Zambia Sugar Open that starts on Thursday in Lusaka and perform better.
