SIX people have died while 51 others, including five children, have been injured after a Mazhandu Family Bus overturned in Kapiri Mposhi, Central Province.
Five people died on the spot and these were four females and a two-year old boy.
The sixth victim, a male juvenile died on the way to hospital.
The bus, registration number ALB 5119 was travelling from Chililabombwe to Lusaka and was being driven by Shadreck Kasweka, aged 47.
The accident happened when the driver lost control of the bus and later overturned at the Green Leaf area in Kapiri Mposhi around 12:00 hours yesterday.
Central Province Permanent Secretary Daisy Ng’ambi, who rushed to the scene before visiting the victims at Kabwe General Hospital, said the Government was saddened by the mishap.
The bodies of the deceased are in Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital mortuary while the injured, including one who was taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), are receiving treatment at Kabwe General
Hospital.
Ms Ng’ambi said the Government would monitor the situation of the injured passengers and help to identify their relatives as well as those of the deceased.
“This is traumatising and I think, together with the hospital, we will ensure that the survivors are looked after and obviously, Government will come in where it can to ensure the victims’ relatives are informed,” she said.
Police assistant public relations officer Esther Katongo said the passengers with minor injuries were being observed at the hospital.
Ms Katongo said the driver had been charged with six counts of causing death by dangerous driving and was in police custody.
She said three of the deceased female victims and one juvenile had been identified while one female and the other male juvenile had not been identified.
Meanwhile, police in Lusaka have recovered property worth more than K1 million that was stolen from a family in Roma residential area last month by robbers who were eventually gunned down by police.
Police have also recovered K 416,950 cash from three Chinese suspects who were allegedly terrorising a fellow Chinese in Lusaka.
In the first incident, eight criminals on March 21 this year attacked a family in Roma and got away with a Land Rover Discovery worth K900,000, a plasma television, LG DVD player, a home theatre, a laptop, pistol and phones, among other items, all worth K1,072,700.
The property that was stolen was displayed yesterday at Lusaka Central Police Station.
Ms Katongo said police had been investigating the matter after the family reported that they were attacked by eight robbers armed with machetes, a gun, an axe and other items.
She said the bandits were using a Toyota Runx with different plate numbers to conduct the robberies in different townships.
In the case involving the three Chinese, police displayed masks and money that was recovered from three suspects who were allegedly terrorising other Chinese residents in Lusaka.
Ms Katongo said police had recovered a motor vehicle that the three were using to steal from their fellow Chinese.  And a total amount of K416,950 was recovered, which is more than three quarters of the money that was stolen.
