FOUR suspected criminals have been gunned down by police during an exchange of fire in Chibolya area in Lusaka.
The four suspects are believed to have been part of a group that has been terrorising residents in Roma Township in the capital city.
The incident happened around 13:00 hours yesterday.
Police spokesperson Charity Chanda said the four had been on the police wanted list for a long time.
“We received information that the criminals who have been terrorising residents in Roma Township in Lusaka had regrouped in Chibolya.
“These suspects have been on the wanted list for a long time,” Ms Chanda said.
Police made a follow up and when the suspects realised that they were being pursued, they started firing at the officers.
Ms Chanda said the police officers shot back and gunned down four of them.
Police also got the Toyota Runx the group was using, alongside a pistol with eight rounds of ammunition.
An AK47 rifle with three rounds of ammunition, an axe, a machete and a crawl bar were also recovered from the scene.
The four bodies were taken to the University Teaching Hospital mortuary.
Meanwhile, a bullet from an AK47 rifle was yesterday fired at the Zambia Daily Mail editorial office in Lusaka.
The incident happened around 12:50 hours.
Two reporters were working from the Features office when they saw a bullet smash through the ceiling on to the floor.
Other members of staff heard the noise and rushed to the office. The matter was reported to the police.
Ms Chanda said police officers went to the scene and found that a bullet had gone through the ceiling board.
She said an investigation in the matter had been launched.
