THE Chinese Embassy and telecommunications giant Huawei have spent well over K150,000 on renovating the basketball court at Zamsure Sports Complex in Lusaka.
The embassy, in conjunction with Huawei Technologies, had undertaken the project of giving the basketball court a facelift in a bid to improve the sport in Zambia.
Zambia Basketball Association (ZBA) vice-president south Conrad Musonda said rehabilitation works would be done in two phases with the initial stage gobbling K150,000.
The basketball court was handed over to ZBA by representatives from the Chinese Embassy and Huawei Technologies yesterday.
“Phase-One involved the painting of the entire basket ball court, changing of the rims and boards,” Musonda said.
He said the second phase would include painting of toilets but that the resources had not yet been availed to complete the project.
Musonda thanked the Chinese government for the gesture and called on other stakeholders to come on board in improving basketball infrastructure in the country.
“The Chinese Embassy and Huawei should be commended for coming forward and assisting ZBA in the growth of basket ball in Zambia,” he said.
He also said the association had organised a Madala’s basketball tournament at Zamsure which was a fundraising venture to support basketball.
Musonda said the tournament targeted former basket ball players who were 35 years old and above and that four other teams from Lusaka and Copperbelt would take part.
