THE Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has said it is ready to meet with President Edgar Lungu and other political leaders to discuss various matters aimed at promoting dialogue, peace and unity in the country.
LAZ president George Chisanga was reacting to Mr Lungu’s announcement that he would engage the association in a matter in which former Attorney general Musa Mwenye and his client Dominic Lungowe had filed a lawsuit against Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) in a London High Court.
Mr Chisanga said in an interview yesterday that LAZ was ready to be engaged by President Lungu and other stakeholders in any matter of dialogue.
“For us, we shall always welcome and embrace people who would want to engage us in dialogue such as President Lungu and other political leaders.
“Our desire has always been to help promote dialogue, peace and unity in the country,” Mr Chisanga said.
He said the association was ready to dialogue with Mr Lungu and would give a comprehensive response on the matter in due course after hearing what the President wanted.
Mr Chisanga said it was for this reason that LAZ had also been denouncing political violence and was in the process of engaging all political players to promote peace and unity.
President Lungu said it was unfortunate that Mr Mwenye, a senior member of the Zambian Bar, could go to a foreign country and allegedly cast aspersions on the integrity of the Zambian Judiciary.
The Head of State was speaking at State House in Lusaka on Tuesday when he swore in five Supreme Court judges namely, Justice Charles Kajimanga, Justice Michael Musonda, Justice Jane Kabuka, Justice Nigel Mutuna and Justice Jones Chinyama.
Mr Lungu was referring to a case in which some residents of Chingola on the Copperbelt have taken mining giant Vedanta and its subsidiary KCM to court in the United Kingdom over alleged toxic substance leaks.
Mr Mwenye was, however, unreachable for a comment by Press time.
