UPCOMING Teenager Kennedy Gilawa outclassed 73 other golfers to win the Mazabuka Golf Club Captain’s trophy in Mazabuka over the weekend.
The 19-year-old Gilawa, a Copperbelt University (CBU) student, amassed 34 points to win the top honour and walk away with a DSTV Explora decoder and immediately declared interest in taking part in the Zambia Sugar Open.
Finishing second was Kelly Tembo on 36 points who took home a microwave oven, while Sikannkn Kabudula won the A Division with 30 points to better Gaspher Bunthale on a count back, while veteran Charlie Butts, also on 30 points, settled for third.
Club Captain Henry Mambwe won the B Division with 34 points and walked away with a dinner set, while Nelson Malaya took the most golf award.
After the event, Maambwe described the tournament as a success and expressed happiness with the turnout of golfers from various golf clubs.
Meanwhile, from Luanshya, Nkana and Roan Golf Clubs won their opening northern junior league games that started at the Roan Antelope Golf Club.
In a league that has attracted six clubs and played over matchplay rules, Chibuluma and Ndola missed this one but would be available in the next round on April 19.
Nkana beat Nchanga 8-4 to share the top spot with Roan who also beat Mufulira with the same margin of points in games each team fielded six players.
On individual performance Nkana dominated the order merit where Stalian Daka and Lwando Mwape were ranked one and two followed by team mates Francis Musonda as Clive Chabala and Osward Chabala of Nchanga closed the top five brackets.
The southern circuit is already in its third round while the northern circuit opened the league on Sunday.
Zambia Junior Golf Association (ZJGA) assistant director North Philimon Mwale, who confirmed the results, asked the corporate world to help sponsor the junior leagues.
