INSPECTOR General of Police Kakoma Kanganja has directed his officers to step up patrols in Woodlands, Chalala and Nyumba Yanga residential areas to clamp down on criminals terrorising the residents.
This follows complaints about the increase in crime, with the most recent one being in Chalala last week where an elderly woman, Betty Sampa, was robbed.
Ms Sampa was hacked on her head and had two of her fingers cut off by a group of thugs.
Mr Kanganja said police had been patrolling the areas, but that there was need to beef up security as the reports emanating from the areas were disturbing.
“I have taken note of the residents’ concerns and I have directed that the police intensify patrols in that area. They have been conducting patrols, I have been monitoring, and it’s only that maybe we need to increase on the patrols,” he said.
A Woodlands resident, Mwikala Chambeshi told the Sunday Times that she and other residents were living in fear as the area had become unsafe.
Ms Chambeshi said thieves had reached an extent of attacking their victims as early as 18:00 hours.
“I fear for my life; it’s very scary. Some time back, my colleague’s house was robbed and the maid was left in the deep freezer,” she said.
