4 inmates arrested

 THE Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in Luapula Province has arrested four inmates at Nchelenge State Prison for trafficking in cannabis.

DEC assistant public relations officer Chibu Mwansa Tembo confirmed the arrest of the four prisoners in a statement yesterday.

Those arrested and jointly charged include Frederick Kunda, 29, Evans Kasapo, 27, Robert Chisala, 33, and Timothy Mumbi, 28, for being in possession of 58 balls of cannabis weighing 69.6 grammes.

Ms Tembo said the four were apprehended within the State Prison.

In Western Province, the DEC has arrested a retired Zambia Army officer for trafficking in cannabis. Brian Kaunu, 55, a retired Zambia Army officer of Kamwala Township in Serenje District has been arrested and jointly charged with Anderson Kasungu, 29, a taxi driver of 341 Dambwa North in Livingstone, for trafficking in 35 kilogrammes of cannabis.

Ms Tembo said the two were arrested in Nakatindi area along the Sesheke Livingstone Road.

In Southern Province, the DEC has arrested and jointly charged Eunice Kaluwe, 42, Ollien Mateyo, 45, and Betty Mutinta, 42, all peasant farmers of Kanatela Village in Pemba District for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis weighing 502 kilogrammes.

All the suspects would appear in court soon.
