ZAMBIA Cricket Union (ZCU) president Reuben Chama has said he will re-contest his seat at the elective annual general meeting (AGM) set for March 19 in Kabwe.
Chama, a former Nkana Cricket Club president, said the sport had made important strides in the last few years and he wanted to continue with the programme.
He said cricket had expanded to Southern and North-Western provinces with an introduction of the sport done in Northern and Eastern provinces last year.
“Yes, I will re-contest my position at the AGM set for March 19 in Kabwe. I feel I have a good programme running and I want to continue. We took over when things were shaky but I feel there is some stability and we are growing the game,” he said.
The ZCU has set March 19 as date for the elective AGM in Kabwe at which all positions in the executive will be contested.
Chama also spoke highly of the girls’ league which is now running and the spreading of the game to schools.
Other members in the current ZCU executive are Inayat Bagas as the vice-president, Ebrahim Yousuf and Peter Kang’ombe as the secretary and treasurer, respectively, while the four committee members are Martin Mutono, Judy Mbulo, Ng’andu Yandikani and Chisenga Musonda.
Meanwhile, the ZCU will in the coming weeks be distributing various cricket equipment to schools on the Copperbelt and Lusaka to help in the growth of the game.
Chama said the cricket equipment was one of the most vital components of the game and the provision of that to schools would help move the game one step forward.
The first of beneficiaries would be Chingola-based schools that will receive the kit at Nchanga Cricket Club with Musonda to distribute. Kitwe and Mufulira-based schools will receive their portion of equipment on March 1 at Nkana Cricket Club and Mufulira Primary School.
Luanshya clubs will receive the equipment from Bharat Sports Club on March 2 with Kanini Sports Club to host the hand-over kit for Ndola-based schools.
