By REBECCA MUSHOTA – Police Cap 628x350THIRTEEN people have been apprehended by police in Luapula, in connection with printing and circulating fake Kwacha and Dollar notes. The first suspects were arrested in December last year, others in January and the latest arrests were made this week. Luapula Province Police chief Hudson Namachila said in an interview yesterday that more would be apprehended as two other suspects were on the run. Mr Namachila said in the process, police had in their possession K100 counterfeit notes worth K98,000 and a fake US$100 note. The other suspects were arrested in Mansa, Chililabombwe, Samfya, Ndola, Mbala and Mpulungu. Three of the 13 suspects had so far appeared in court. Mr Namachila said the scandal was first observed in Mansa in December last year, after the fake money was used in the town. “We searched for a manufacturing plant here, but there was nothing. We have been searching and now preliminary investigations are pointing to Tunduma in Tanzania or Nakonde in Zambia,” he said. Once the two on the run had been apprehended, Mr Namachila said, the actual place at, which the fake money was being printed would be found. The matter had been under investigation for a long time now and would soon be concluded. Police were working with the Bank of Zambia (BoZ) to deal with the problem. The BoZ recently issued a warning to members of the public that some counterfeit K100 and K50 notes were in circulation. The counterfeit notes were scanned copies of original banknotes bearing various serial numbers and had a smooth surface compared to genuine banknotes. The BoZ said members of the public needed to be extra cautious, when making financial dealings.
