By JIM FIKOLOMA –
MAZABUKA’s quest to win the South Triangular golf championship and subsequently get to represent the Southern Province at the National Quadrangular Golf Tournament suffered a setback as Choma put up a spirited fight to win the second leg of the tournament held in Maamba on Sunday.
This win has put Choma right in the hunt for the qualification as they now trail by a single point margin against arch-rivals Mazabuka, who are tied with unfancied Maamba on 33 points.
Choma, however, stand a better chance to sail through as they will host the decisive final leg in two weeks’ time to determine the region’s representative.
Mazabuka team manager Alfred Akasiwa conceded defeat in the second leg of the competition and attributed the defeat to poor performance by some senior golfers owing to the weather in Maamba which he described as extremely hot.
The warm weather was, however, just one of the cocktail of reasons Mazabuka attributed the loss to.
“The torrid weather in Maamba exacerbated by warm drinks which were not refrigerated due to load shedding, affected our performance.
“The madalas came back with disappointing scores and had it not been for the juniors, we could have been whitewashed by Choma,” Akasiwa said.
He praised the juniors saying they played well with particular outstanding performance by Malambo Mweemba and Nawa Sitali.
However, Akasiwa is hopeful that the final leg will go their way, adding that the team will train hard to maintain the lead and qualify to the national tournament.
