ZAMBIA Amateur Athletics Association (ZAAA) president Elias Mpondela says multi-talented athlete, Kabange Mupopo, needs to decide which sport to compete in ahead of a busy schedule.
Mpondela said ZAAA will engage the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) to see how best the two can come up with a solution that would best suit Mupopo, who is specialised in both athletics and football.
Mupopo, who has already qualified to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, has been summoned to the Shepolopolo squad preparing for the Cameroon 2016 Africa Women Championship qualifier against Namibia on March 5.
She is on February 6 expected to take part in the IAAF Permit Meet and the IAAF Indoor Tour respectively in Germany prior to competing at the World Indoor Games in Portland, USA from March 17 to 20.
Mpondela said in an interview yesterday that ZAAA and FAZ will need to liaise so that no complications arise in the future over the athlete’s commitment.
“We need to sit down with FAZ so that we can avoid complications in the future over the athletes divided commitments to both soccer and athletics. We have so far worked well with FAZ but this year is tricky because we have the AWC taking place and also the Portland athletics in America,” he said.
Mpondela acknowledged that Mupopo was doing the country proud but that there was need to harmonise her timetable which at times would clash looking at the various engagements coming up.
