MORE than 30 students at the Copperbelt University (CBU) in Kitwe have been apprehended following a protest that characterised the institution yesterday.
The protest, which was over meal allowances, led to students taking to the streets, blocking roads leading to and from the CBU campus.
The students fought running battles with the police who moved in to quell the protests that saw a police vehicle having its windscreen smashed.
Copperbelt Commissioner of Police Charity Katanga confirmed the arrest of the students during a fracas that started around 11:00 hours when students mobilised and attempted to march to the streets.
The students first assembled inside the campus, before embarking on a procession to Jambo Drive, but were quickly intercepted by Police in riot gear.
Ms Katanga who was at CBU by 17:00 hours could not give the exact number of students that were arrested as they were still compiling records by press time.
She said in an interview that the figure exceeded 30 but a comprehensive statement would follow.
