GREEN Eagles goal shooter Lucy Jere was on Friday night crowned Zambia National Service (ZNS) Sportswoman-of-the-Year as rugby player Tedious Chipoya bagged the men’s award.
The event held at the ZNS Makeni Garrison officers Mess in Lusaka saw volleyball trainer Henry Banda walk away with the Coach-of-the-Year accolade as football player Emmanuel Zulu received the Most Improved Award.
George Njovu and Kangwa Mwale got the Most Consistent and Most Valuable players’ awards respectively.
ZNS commandant Nathan Mulenga urged the athletes to work hard and ensure they excel in their respective fields and make sport a source of livelihood as was the case everywhere.
Lieutenant General Mulenga, in a speech read on his behalf by ZNS secretary Alex Malichi, said sport plays an important role in the promotion of peace and unity.
“Considering that sports is expensive and therefore a huge strain on the resources of government institutions like ours, we wish to call on the corporate world, cooperating partners and other individuals to consider partnering with the government in the promotion anddevelopment of various sports programmes in the country,” Mulenga said.
