CATHERINE Phiri arrived in Mexico yesterday bubbling with confidence that she will beat World Boxing Council (WBC) bantamweight gold title champion Yazmine Rivas this Saturday.
The WBC silver champion has asked Zambians to put her in prayers as she faces Rivas and that the flight delays will not affect her in any way.
“Everything is going on well, according to plan. I was training in South Africa during the three days we were delayed. I am ready and I am asking for the Zambian people to remember me in prayers,” Catherine said in an interview.
Catherine, together with Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) manager Christopher Malunga and coach Mike ‘Weaver’ Zulu, arrived in Mexico around 09:00 hours yesterday via New York.
Malunga expressed happiness with the facilities and reception accorded to them upon arrival.
“We have arrived safely and checked in a hotel. Everything is fine. The restaurant and gymnasium are okay and we are happy with the reception. We are looking forward to meet officials, promoters and view the venue,” Malunga said.
The OQBP team, that left Lusaka on Friday, was scheduled to set up a training camp in the United States before flying into Mexico but got marooned in South Africa for three days due to stormy weather in America.
